Well thankfully to Tony Palliser a brilliant photographer and someone who has taught me and mentored me throughout my whole time shooting has let me borrow his Canon 800mm 5.6 IS L lens.  This baby is big! thats all i have to say about that. Here is a shot mounted with a 1dsmk3 and a 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 on front left, and 70-200 f/2.8 IS on the front left.  It is BIG!

So armed with this stupidity bit of glass i decided to paparazzi out some people from my balcony. I found what i think is a young family many hundred meters away. Here is a shot taken with my iphone to give you an idea of how far we are shooting.

As you can see this lens is absolutely dangerous in the hands of paps which makes me want to go out and find Ms Bingle and see if i can get her attention 🙂 or atleast clarkey. Off to shoot some real tests tomorrow and will be interesting to see how far you can really push this lens. From all initial tests, i have never had a lens focus so quickly. It is almost like the gears are ready to go as soon as you think about pushing the button. It is lightening quick! For professional bird photographers (like Tony) who require this lens, i dare say you can not take a 500mm over this even with a 2x extender on it. Next job – get the 2x on the this 🙂 If you would like to see the 100% images click here to get access to my flickr where the images are uploaded.
